"The ice cream shops near me don't use TFWs. An ice cream sandwich which will run you $XX. And a pint of ice cream is $XX. Workers are making at least $XXXXX an hour to scoop because that is minimum wage. Commercial rents keep going up because of corporate greed -- not a term I use lightly. At some point sales will go down because people can't afford to buy as much. Small businesses get squeezed from all sides. If small businesses say they need cheap labour to survive it's worth looking at the bigger picture of their costs"

"The unfortunate reality is that $70K is not a "good salary" in places where rent is $2400. If he doesn't want to do OT then he needs to find a different way to make money. Or move where the cost of living is cheaper. 🤷♀ In my world I know folks working around the clock to build something for themselves. Either side hustles on top of day jobs or businesses. You can't get ahead on a single salary. But good for him for moving back home to save money. That's smart"

"I think people forget these are small businesses being squeezed by food inflation and rising minimum wage. I didn't quite catch what he's saying in the interview but he said he pays $1.5M in taxes a year. My guess is that we need tax breaks for small businesses that employ Canadians since we can't get around minimum wage. Years and years ago I learned that lots of Tamil people work in Toronto kitchens. And they always had a reputation of being good cooks"

"I know there's a lot of shitting on Canada on X. And a lot of glorifying the US on Canadian conservative X. But we make regular road trips down to the US. And we always miss things about Canada. And we're always happy to come home no matter how amazing our vacation was. Maybe it's the food in Canada. Or the energy. Or the fact that the inequality isn't quite as pronounced as in the US. It just feels like Canada has a lot of potential to be a great country. If only we could get a handle on our socialism"

"We mostly eat vegetarian Indian food if we go out as it's cheap and good. (Neither of us is veg.) You can get a lot of food plus squeeze in a XX% tip for less than $XX all in. I don't eat much wheat so sandwiches are usually a no for me. But if you do eat bread you're lucky because you can get a lot of delicious ones that are well priced. 😋"

"I know rents are a huge problem in Toronto as I've seen everything from restos to coffee shops and yoga studios go under. You'd basically need a bit of light communism and cap rents to prevent that from happening. There's no other way. I've heard so many stories from small biz owners"
