"I slightly misremembered the incident. During the Soviet-Sino border war the Soviets discreetly asked the U.S. (and several other countries) what we would think of a Soviet preemptive strike on China's nuclear arsenal. So there was no proposal for a joint strike but rather a Soviet diplomatic feeler about how the American government would respond to one. It was taken seriously enough however that Nixon put the U.S. nuclear arsenal on high alert. As for your count of the number of times the U.S. threatened to nuke China there were three - and one reportedly never made it to Beijing. Two were"

"Harrison Ford like Tom Cruise has remained a major star for decades. But there are two differences. Ford got a later start and relied more on the success of his early films to launch his stardom while Cruise could carry a weak movie. I can't imagine that even Ford at the height of his star power could turn a dog like COCKTAIL into a top ten film of the year. SABRINA and RANDOM HEARTS bombed. SIX DAYS SEVEN NIGHTS didn't bomb but it wasn't a hit. WORKING GIRL (1988) was a minor hit but Ford felt like a minor part to that film of mostly stellar females performances. Ford's star power has also"

"And they will be getting older in the next term even with McConnell's retirement. From 1925 to 1985 the average ages of both U.S. senators and congressmen were fairly steady. Mid-fifties for a senator and low fifties for a representative. It's only been in the last forty years that the average age of both lawmakers has increased dramatically"

"@MikeRathbone86 Id wager more truly great minds came into the United States from 1924 to 1965 than in any other forty-year period of U. S. history including the past forty years"

"There were higher rates of intermarriage among Jews and Gentiles in pre-Nazi Germany than in the America of the early- and mid-20th century. From a book Razib recommended to his readers long ago: THE PITY OF IT ALL: A PORTRAIT OF THE GERMAN-JEWISH EPOCH 1743-1933"

"True but franchising provides a safety margin for many of today's films that was only beginning to exist in the 1980s. Eastwood took advantage of it with his Dirty Harry films but Wayne was too old to exploit it. Tom Cruise's filmography in the 1980s and 1990s was almost entirely original films. He didn't make his first sequel until 2000 (MI2). Even in the oughties he was still much more likely to make original movies than he was a sequel. But over the last fifteen years (2011-2025) Cruise has made four additional MI sequels two Jack Reacher films (which should be considered a failed attempt"

"I think MI franchise success has less to do with any of the actors than with a successful formula that just happens to work. Cruise does a fine job as Ethan Hawke but I'm not sure the franchise would be less successful if say Matt Damon or Leonardo DiCaprio or Ben Affleck was in the lead role"

"You're right that nukes were the primary pre-war focus and where the most questionable intelligence was employed but I disagree that biological and chemical weapons were not concerns. Saddam used chemical weapons to kill thousands possibly tens of thousands of Iranians. Biological weapons were also a legitimate concern. Unlike nukes biological and chemical weapons require minimal capital investment. Ultimately it didn't matter. We found nothing. No N or B or C. Just some rusty unused buckets of chemical weapons that posed more risk to the users than the targets"

"Everyone is wrong on occasion. I can live with a politician I support making an occasional mistake. It happens. But both the Bush administration and the Neocons largely compounded their errors by digging in on post-war Iraq with a classic bait-and-switch. An action undertaken to address what they claimed was a national security threat became by necessity an exercise in nation-building. Realism morphed into Idealism without so much as an apology"

"@Glasseye31 @SwipeWright It's entirely fair to believe Israel's interests overly influence U.S. decision-making in the Middle East. You're not a Nazi for believing this; you're not even a bad guy for this belief. I believe it"

"Sure it is. Hungary is both a NATO member and has formally condemned Russia's invasion which puts it on the side of the West yet Budapest also wants immediate negotiations between Moscow and the West to end the war disagrees with military escalations and believes the West shares some blame for the conflict which puts it on the side of Russia. Sounds like a neutral site. Orban and Trump's view of the conflict is broadly aligned. They disagree on a few important points (particularly Hungary's reliance on oil imports from Russia) but they share agreement on most issues related to the war"

"I was honestly surprised that a man who was born in San Francisco grew up in the Bay Area and then helped to set up his company's new HQ there and has contributed in many ways to the decline of the city with his financial support of questionable local policies would make such a proclamation. When I heard the comment yesterday I told my wife "that guy just kicked up a shitstorm." Had Benioff been an outsider his mistake would've been more understandable. But he's a local and already supports many dim-witted local policies on issues like the homeless. So his comment was an unexpected surprise"

"Hungary is not a disinterested party and long-time neutral like Switzerland but Budapest's status as a neutral is probably as good as if not better than nearly every other country in Europe. It's both a NATO and EU member has good ties with the current U.S. administration but it has argued against widespread sanctions on Russia and believes the West shares some blame for the conflict"

"I have many criticisms of Caro's work but he clearly did more solid investigative work into LBJ's life than any other biographer and it's not even close. He turned up things that other reporters and historians should've caught long before had they properly done their jobs. Biographers like Robert Dallek can complain of Caro's work all they want but much of their criticism smacks of sour grapes"

"While the practice of using a DH is common now in college and high school it wasn't common before the 1980s. Pitchers grew up cultivating their talents as hitters for nearly the first century of baseball history. Warren Spahn for example hit XX HRs over the course of MLB career. In one season he battled .333. Don Drysdale hit .300 in 1965 in XXX at-bats when he won XX games as a Dodgers' starting pitcher"

"Caro published THE PATH TO POWER in 1982 but began researching the book in 1975. That was just two years after LBJ's sudden death and just six years after the end of his presidency. As for the 1948 Senate election Caro tracked down Luis Salas in 1986 who was XX years old. Salas had been the election judge of Precinct XX in that election. He had had admitted in 1977 to the Associated Press that he had been complicit in helping Johnson steal that election. No one - no journalist no historian - followed up on Salas' public claim for nearly ten years until Caro tracked Salas down to a mobile home"
