"Here's what's going to happen to the government grocery stores in NYC: -- A study will be convened that last two years -- A long report nobody reads will be issued suggesting it would be too costly for too little use. -- Regardless to save face one limited version will eventually be opened in S Bronx as "test". -- It will be under-utilized because crap offerings . -- it will effectively operate as food pantry for low-income giving out canned products (which already exists) and cheap kale for the few well-to-do gentrifiers in neighborhood. -- it will close up after a year with zero fan-fare" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-06-26 16:18:19 UTC 91.3K followers, 83.1K engagements

"My issue with the the city grocery store thing is and has always been what are you going to do about security Because I can tell you that and taste is the biggest issue in these "food deserts" Prosecuting aggressively shop lifting theft and anti-social behavior (in and around store) sure doesn't seem high on Mamdani's radar" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-19 14:25:19 UTC 91.3K followers, 48.5K engagements

"@ingelramdecoucy I can tell you as an urbanist the field has a lot of people who want to be outraged. They are so committed to the bit that the US sucks (our transportation does but for complicated reasons) that they take that attitude into every facet of life" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-21 11:33:19 UTC 91.3K followers, XXX engagements

"@ingelramdecoucy Jack was an exact replica of my first boss on wall street and it's amazing that such a left coded show got so much correct about the right in a way that wasn't simply condescending" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-20 12:41:59 UTC 91.3K followers, XXX engagements
"Downtowns in cities like Indianapolis are really depressing vast and mostly empty with less activity than near the outer ring malls & shopping plazas. Municipal business (courts government offices) are primary draw and they close at night. There are a few larger private business but they stay fortified in their towers. Theres a few destination sights (sports arenas etc) but those are only periodically busy. The only real long term committed residents are the homeless who efficiently take over and so everything becomes about them bathroom codes limited outdoor seating shuttered public spaces" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-15 12:10:15 UTC 91.3K followers, 174.2K engagements
"Most annoying thing about discussion of crime in US is intentional failure to recognize how local it is changing often from block to block within a city. US is indeed a violent dangerous country by global standards especially given how wealthy we are and Minneapolis is high on the list. But that crime is almost entirely confined to a few neighborhoods that can be avoided if you are in the know. Being in the know is the issue and I tell foreigners about to visit that crime in US is not just a Hollywood stereotype so be aware but it can also be easily avoided" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-13 09:58:44 UTC 91.3K followers, 432.1K engagements

"TV shows force you to choose a side. If you are doing a book tour -- on a subject even tangentially political -- you can go on MSNBC or FOX but not both. Chris is part of that so was Colbert so please spare me the crocodile tears from people paid 10MM/year to toss intellectually vapid red meat to the audiences" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-20 12:12:24 UTC 91.3K followers, 8287 engagements

"Ahead of my month long greyhound trip around Australia I asked AI for book recommendations. Here is the list. My prompt: "Suggest ten works of Australian fiction that will provide me historical and cultural insight which are not simply activist manifestos masquerading as fiction" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-22 14:12:02 UTC 91.3K followers, 6214 engagements
"I'm not a free market libertarian guy. I think the government can provide an alternative to for profit grocery stores but running them in "food deserts" means running them in high crime neighborhoods and success is entirely about cultural issues not economic one and the left currently does not want to acknowledge or address those. You have to provide heavy policing. Will they do that" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-19 14:36:36 UTC 91.3K followers, 9806 engagements
"Since 2016 writers/pundits/comedians have been provided with immense incentive to choose a side and turn into ideological political monomaniacal hacks -- Chris Colbert among others chose to go in the anti-Trump direction and have made huge bucks from it. Others have gone in the exact opposite direction and made equally huge bucks from it. If the intellectual freedom of our society is being threatened by anything it's by the mammonistic pull of the market and our lavish devotion to it" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-20 12:07:26 UTC 91.3K followers, 14.4K engagements
"@billybinion yeah. Right now I've had four homeless guys one covered in his own filth try to sell me lifted stuff while I'm sitting here sipping my coffee in Downtown Chicago. "I know the usual answers (jobs scene etc) but still dont get why more young hip people priced out of NYC & SF dont move to places like Columbus Ohio & create a scene. Plenty of room here" @Chris_arnade on X 2025-07-13 21:52:49 UTC 91.3K followers, 157.1K engagements
