"I grew up in Kingston X. My family still owns the house and thats where I live when Im in Jamaica. Massive increase in equity but it wasnt strategic. They bought close to work in the early 80s and bought what they liked then had to repair it after Gilbert destroyed it. Weve also invested in parts of Florida and seen lots of run up then lots of drop in 2008/9 and now Im seeing friends losing out right now as prices slide here in Central Florida. Lastly Ive also seen people buy a house then get reassigned for their job and get stuck carrying a mortgage while renting. Ill buy when Im ready to"

"Ricardo Ive gotten way more than X% per year on my money by investing that capital into building my own business and zero stress with property headaches the entire time. This is why Rent vs Buy is a PERSONAL decision and you have to run the numbers for YOUR case. Its not a one size fits all answer. If I wasnt building a business and just working 9-5 then I personally can get XX% per year right now in real estate-backed investment and would still rather put the money there and THEN use that to eventually pay the mortgage of a property I buy so that the asset pays for the liability AND Im still"
