The original WSEG XX report led to MAD - both sides have missiles. Missile defense is recognized as infeasible for technological and cost reasons, at least until some Livermore grifters aligned with Reagan ("Ray-Gun") salesmanship... The world we live in now.

Re: conventional munitions, US is trying to develop its own hypersonic missiles to threaten enemy ships and key infrastructure (air defense radars, power systems, etc.) at long range.

No one can avoid taking hits from a peer opponent, and maybe even a much weaker opponent that got the missiles from someone else (Houthis). 

Your FONOPS in the Red Sea will fail (oh that already happened). 

You will sue for peace as you run out of interceptors while your opponent still has many cheap missiles left to fire (oh that already happened but we lied about it), etc. etc.
