The first (June) bout was for the inaugural N.Y. State welterweight championship. Basilio would get his first title shot following this fight, dropping a 15-round split decision to Welterweight CHampion Kid Gavilan. Both the United Press (6-4-2) and the AP (6-5-1) would unofficially score the second bout (on the 25th) for Graham and United Press would report on the bout: "Veteran Billy Graham of N.Y. came from behind Saturday night to hold N.Y state welterweight champion Carmen Basilio to a XX round draw in their "rubber match" in War Memorial Auditorium. Basilio forced the fighting in the early rounds and appeared to have a decided advantage in the first half of the bout. But he tired and suffered a severe pounding from Graham's solid left jabs in the closing rounds. At the end, Basilio, of Canastota, N.Y., was bleeding freely from a gash beneath his left eye and from the nose. He fought the last three rounds with his left eye practically closed."
