Once you see historical patterns surrounding nomadism, it's hard to defend the idea that all nomads for all of history were living a grim, Hobbesian life that they were desperately trying to escape. The reality is basically always the complete opposite. Nomads would quite often rather fight and die than settle, and in their oral histories, they often make expressions of pity or disgust at the sedentary way of life. In the language of the Kabbabish nomads of the Sahara, for example, the word for "settled person" and "slave" is the same word. They look upon the settled life with utmost scorn and contempt. In light of this, hearing modern sedentary people speak as if nomadism was some horrible chapter in human history that has mercifully ended, and that such a life is "no longer possible," or "unnatural," or "not suited for families," or whatever else -- is a complete absurdity. The first time a genome is stitched into the sedentary civilized project, it is by force; the children of those defeated will be told that their great-great-grandparents' way of life was miserable. And if they cannot tolerate sedentary life, they will be given alcohol, televisions, fentanyl, and smartphones just to keep them from re-awakening to the nomadic way of life. Civilized, settled peoples fear the nomad and hate him. They not only wish to settle him by force, they wish to erase his genome from the human species, and re-tell his history as if it were a hundred-thousand years of hell rather than a glorious and self-reliant past. They will lie, maim, kill, build reservations, abduct children, and re-write history toward the end of permanently erasing the nomad from the world. They cannot tolerate an un-taxable, armed, self-reliant band of people who might raid their settlements or make their worker-taxpayer-serfs defect to the steppelands. But their efforts will always fail. Nomadism will always re-emerge, again and again. It will never die. XXXXX engagements [Post Link](https://x.com/shagbark_hick/status/1948388571540312085)
