"It's kind of incredible what "branding" can do for a state. MT is absolutely not "the most libertarian state" but the reputation persists because that was how it was in the 90's. My wife's family has lived there for many years. Property taxes doubled in a single year county passed ordinances against backyard chickens (even in rural areas) etc. It's a "purple" state now.
