On the one hand, there clearly Russian infiltration that needs to be dealt with. On the other hand, people are rightly worried that the new law puts too much power in the hands of the President. The protests in Kyiv and the growing criticism from the EU seem to have caused Zelenskyy to reconsider and he has promised to submit a new bill to resolve some of the concerns. No details available yet. The remarkable thing about this story isn’t that the Kremlin shills jumped on it as evidence of corruption and authoritarianism in Ukraine. It’s that Ukrainians took to the streets — again — in the middle of a war to protest what they saw as a move that could weaken democracy there. The contrast with Russia could not have been starker. Since the new law might also delay Ukraine’s EU ascension, I would think Zelenskyy will in fact reconsider how to deal with Russian infiltration in a way that is also satisfactory to the protesters.
