Jose Lequerica, 50, has been indicted on two counts of second-degree murder for the brutal November 2024 slaying of his 48-year-old wife, Asli Ak, in Queens, New York. Lequerica was arrested on Tuesday, July 22, at his home in Jackson Heights. He formally pleaded not guilty & is being held without bail.

Prosecutors allege the fatal attack took place in the late evening hours of November 15, 2024, in the couple's bedroom, where Lequerica "repeatedly struck his wife on her face, head and body." He then reportedly left their home for about two hours. Upon his return, he allegedly "did not bother to check on the condition of his wife" & instead "chose to fall asleep on the couch."

The following morning, Lequerica allegedly found Asli unconscious on the floor around 10:45 AM but left her to suffer for over seven hours before finally calling XXX at 6:22 PM. Asli was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where she had "severe bruising to her face, head, and body" & never recovered, being declared brain-dead on November 20, 2024. An autopsy determined her death was a homicide caused by "blunt force trauma to the head," revealing "severe head injuries including a hematoma that caused swelling inside the head, crushing her brain stem." Asli's brother, who started a GoFundMe, stated she "touched the hearts of many" as a teacher & real estate broker. Lequerica is scheduled to appear in court again on August XX.
