I think it's hilarious that people from other states occasionally see the dirt-cheap prices of real estate in Upstate NY and assume it's a scam, or criminal or whatever.

Nope, it's real and legal. Our State is so poorly run that in essence, you get PAID to buy property here. I say this because there's no way I could've built my house for what I paid for it ($33k for 3bd 1100 sq ft, move-in ready with a two-story barn). And there's NO way you could've built that Cathedral today for $250k.

It is a crisis of governance so extreme and so deeply entrenched, it's almost impossible for people from other states (except IL) to understand. And the people here are so profoundly demoralized, the 'darkness' here is actually frightening to visitors. People do not "dream" here, or if they do, they only dream of leaving.

Like some kind of post-Soviet doppelganger of America.
