Let's say you "gamble" from years 18-25 and end up with $X starting at XX. You're still young - so its not the end of the world. Then you go ahead and start with the $500/month. At age 68? Now instead of $3.6M its $2.06M. XX% of a potential portfolio gone because of gambling instead of letting time work on your side. If you’re XX and can invest just $500/month for XX years, you could end up with ~$3.6M - while only contributing $300K total.
