His take home pay on 70K should be around 4700 a month, assuming standard deduction.  My number doesn't include state income tax.    California state income tax would make this about $4500/month.   
My first salary out of college was around 80K today.  Had a roommate, was able to save 20k (in mid 1989 dollars) for a down payment on home in X years ( in addition to 401k savings).
