It’s even worse for seniors with disabilities who can’t work to make up the loss. Some states have state income tax. But even in those states that don’t, property tax and home insurance are taxing seniors out of their homes. No tax on Social Security doesn’t help seniors who are unable to work, because they don’t make enough to file a federal tax return anyway. Federal income tax is not the problem. PROPERTY TAX is. And for some, state income tax as well. Some seniors are veterans with disabilities who served this country and are now unable to work. They’re losing their homes because of property taxes. I’m a Vietnam era veteran who has worked all my adult life after having served. I’ve been vocal about this here in Texas where property taxes have been escalating out of control. Property gets reassessed every year in Texas, and property taxes go up every year. The amount of the tax increase is always more than any meager cost of living adjustments we ever see on social security. The actual cost of necessities—food, medicine, barebones supplies, and electricity just to get by is ever-increasing, making it impossible for many of us to make ends meet on fixed income. Property tax is kicking us when we’re already down. And why are seniors paying property taxes for schools? Seniors don’t have kids in school. Let the working parents pay for the schools. It’s their kids! When you have served this country and you’re about to be taxed out of a lousy mobile home you bought with your last bit of savings, and the cost of a rental is higher than your existing house payment, you are left with nowhere to go—no path out of the trap. This is how many seniors and veterans end up homeless on the streets. It’s pretty sickening that this is how America thanks us for our service plus a lifetime of working contributions. It’s getting harder for us not to have a jaded view. God bless.
