⚠️ WARNING: This post contains graphic descriptions of child murder.

Melissa Wilband, 28, has been jailed for XX years for the manslaughter of her four-month-old daughter, Lexi. Lexi collapsed at the family home in Newent, Gloucestershire, UK, during the first Covid lockdown after being violently shaken.

Tests showed Lexi suffered bleeding on her brain, likely caused by being violently shaken shortly before her collapse and on at least one earlier occasion. Mr Justice Saini stated he was "sure on the evidence that Lexi had been shaken by you in another, less violent, incident before that Easter Sunday." He added, "It is hard to imagine the pain that Lexi must have suffered." Lexi died six days after collapsing, at Bristol children's hospital.

The court heard Wilband conceived Lexi with another man while separated from her then-partner, Jack Wheeler, XX. She tried to deceive Wheeler into believing he was the father by presenting him with a fake paternity test. A genuine DNA test later confirmed Wheeler was not biologically related. Wilband admitted faking the document, stating, "I wanted him to be Lexi’s dad."

Wheeler had also been accused of manslaughter, but the charge was dropped, and he was found not guilty of causing or allowing Lexi's death. The court heard Wilband was aware her baby might die but did not stay at her bedside.
