Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department stated that Malcolm drowned on Sunday afternoon, July 20, on a beach in Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean. First responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue. Malcolm's representatives declined immediate comment, but friends & colleagues shared tributes on social media. Tracee Ellis Ross, who co-starred with Malcolm, wrote, "My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant. You made the world a brighter place." Morris Chestnut stated he was "heartbroken," calling Malcolm "One of the nicest in the business." Singer-songwriter Ledisi praised his "beautiful light" & being "a class act." Niecy Nash wrote that she had just spoken to Malcolm, who was "giving me my flowers for my work" & expressed happiness in his marriage. Oscar-winning actor Viola Davis wrote, "Theo was OUR son, OUR brother, OUR friend... We reveled in your life and are gutted by this loss." He also won a Grammy in 2015 & was nominated for a spoken word poetry album in 2023.
