Humid heat is like hell to me, mostly. I always thought it was a shame they were prevented from seceding. No idea why XXXXXXX Americans had to die to keep them in. The South really is something different from the rest of America -- feels foreign to me in a way the West, the Midwest, the Plains, and New England just doesn't and never did. And there's basically no way for a non-Southerner to talk about, visit, or think about the South without making Southerners mad. If I move there, I'm a filthy carpetbagger; if I say I hate it (thereby advertising to fellow Yankees that they shouldn't move there to carpetbag it up there, which you'd think they'd see as a favor) they're offended. If I don't visit it or write about it, they're mad; but if I did visit and write about it they'd pretty well hate what I'd ever say about the place. So it's a topic better kept well enough out of mind. A region of the US a wise Yankee ought to leave well enough alone. After the last round of death threats over this subject, I learned to just not talk about it. I'm glad some people like the South, and I'm content to leave it to them. If I had to guess, even this mild and moderate view on the matter will probably make them mad, too.
