An 18-year-old recently turned to Reddit’s Personal Finance forum looking for help on how to start investing. The teen already has a savings account earning XXXX% APY through Wealthfront but wanted guidance on making smarter long-term financial moves.

Redditors jumped in with advice, and the top suggestion was to open a retirement account. Since the teen is likely in a low tax bracket, many recommended starting with a Roth IRA.

These accounts are taxed upfront, but all future gains and withdrawals are tax-free. Others noted that even without an employer-sponsored plan, anyone can open an IRA, especially if doing freelance or part-time work.

Another big tip was to start thinking like a business owner. The teen currently works full-time in HVAC, and commenters encouraged learning the ins and outs of the trade as well as how to run a company. Owning a business offers greater income potential and more control over financial stability.

For those not ready to run a company, index funds came up as the easiest and safest way to begin investing. These low-fee funds track markets like the S&P XXX and outperform most active investors.

At 18, the poster has time on their side and can afford to ride out any market bumps.
