Apple has a top distribution network (iPhone users) bar none but no credible AI solutions. They missed train, started late, continued to face delays. I was expecting them to acquire a top AI lab a year ago. Alas, they seemed to want to do it in-house, which is vintage Apple but also proving very difficult so far. Foundational models are not commoditized after all. xAI on the other hand is easily one of the top AI models but similarly suffers from a late start, hence falling behind ChatGPT, and from Elon’s signature cavalier attitude towards safety and his penchant for conspiracy theories, which combined with his recent embrace of rightwing politics, produced a toxic cocktail of a Frankensteinian AI model that’s power and dangerous at once. This dissuades corporate adoption while xAI is bleeding hundreds of millions if not billions. AI is expensive. So this suggests a very natural tie-up btwn Apple and xAI, where each party has something that the other party wants/needs. OpenAI was supposed to be that partner but clearly OAI had bigger (hardware) ambitions while Apple’s heart also wasn’t in the temporary strategic relationship while they thought they’d build out their own model. Now both sides are realizing the partnership isn’t going to last. It remains to seen whether the current Apple leadership has the courage to go for something like an “Apple-xAI partnership”. My sense is that the current Apple leaders under Cook are quite risk averse and Elon/xAI present more controversy risks than they may be comfortable with. The recent MechaHitler fiasco and Elon’s fallout with Trump are just recent examples. Apple/Cook were already in Trump’s bad column for producing in China.
