Let me build on my friends case. Successful biotech is a virtuois cycle. Data validates science which builds value and brings in more capital. The issue is that XX% of drugs that start phase X never make it to commercial.
 
The risk in biotech investing is trading value in the form of validation for potential in the form of risk. He who takes the most risk (early stage) has the biggest reward and most risk in XX% failures. He who takes lower risk (late stage) makes lower potential but has far less risk. 

I have tried both. I lost money gambling on early stage, but I made huge wins investing in later stage companies. Phase X data into early commercial are my sweat spot.
