I've always hated dogs, and among those I grew up around, this was an absolutely normal mentality. So the sudden shift in the collective conscious about these animals is totally baffling to me.

Those who walk on rural roads know it well: loose dogs are a blight. Chained-up barking behemoths snarling at you from yards are an antisocial disgrace. I've been chased, bit, barked at, and when I've responded with any degree of anger or discomfort at the behavior of peoples' dogs, their owners were often indignant with me.

Even after the first time I got bit, the lady who owned the dog kept repeating that her dog was so nice. I said: "yeah it's so nice it just bit me and drew blood." She rolled her eyes and looked offended -- my pants were all bloody.

And if you live in a small town you might know it: the doggie drama never ends. Endless all-night barking, fights, rabies, fights over dogshit, animal control. People acting like the whole world should stop for the sake of their dogs; I've even seen family cut each other off over some perceived offense against a dog's honor. It's constant madness.

I get that some people love their dogs and are responsible dog owners. OK. But such people should not act surprised when they encounter others who are leery of dogs, and generally consider them to be menaces who have bizarrely and suddenly risen to semi-deity status in the minds of some of the nuttiest people in this country.
