Investing is a power-law game. Venture capital is already a 50-plus-year-old industry, hedge funds have existed for over XX years, and the first private-equity firms only emerged in the late 1970s. 

If you tried to list the players in each field, you wouldn’t get past fifty - especially among newer funds. 

Like any business, some firms are good, a few are great, and most are bad; you could make the same case for oil companies, real-estate developers, et al.
