By what I know, descendants of those groups (such as myself) that wound up in the New World retained an irrepressible nomadic urge, but expressed it in novel ways -- like cowboying, hoboing, railroad work, and the military. The few descendants who retained a way of life at all similar to that of the old country were the showmen and 'carnies', like my own father... Those who came to America to leave the Traveller ways behind largely went into factories and so on, but would be poorly adjusted to it, and would often become notorious drunks... there are costs to snuffing out the traveling urge in a fellow of this descent, to be sure. You'd think at least a few of these types would've come, built caravans, and made good use of our Wide Open Spaces. Instead, basically none did. Nonetheless, I realize my own travelling impulse can only be conceived of as a thing of the bloodline; a continuation of an ancient thing.
