The epicenter was just off the coast of the highly active Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic caldera west of the city, at a depth of XXX miles. Local residents reported hearing a "roar" & feeling a "strong tremor." One woman in the Vomero district stated, "We rocked a lot... I'm still shaking." A local in the Fuorigrotta suburb described the experience as "terrifying." Rail traffic was temporarily suspended. No injuries or significant damage were initially reported, but firefighters later pulled an injured woman from rubble after a ceiling collapsed in her house in Pozzuoli, and damage to homes & cars was seen from falling rocks. The tremors are part of a seismic swarm, with a dozen detected since just before X AM, & more cannot be ruled out. This quake measured the same magnitude as one recorded on March 13, the strongest to hit the region in XX years. The Vesuvius Observatory also recorded smaller earthquakes overnight. The most violent earthquake in the southern Italian city in recent times, a 6.9-magnitude quake in November 1980, claimed XXXXX lives.
