An off-duty firefighter traveling behind a Somerset school coach that overturned in the UK was able to save lives by immediately freeing children. The horrific crash occurred around 3:00 PM on Thursday, July 17, on the A396 near Wheddon Cross. The 70-seater bus was carrying pupils from Minehead Middle School, believed to be aged nine & ten, following an end-of-term trip to Exmoor Zoo. Emergency services rushed to the remote rural location, where one child was pronounced dead at the scene. Twenty-one others were taken to hospital with various injuries. Gavin Ellis of Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service praised the off-duty firefighter for his "immediate [action] to start releasing those casualties from the bus." Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington of Avon & Somerset Police confirmed the fatality, expressing sympathies to the child's family.
