Felix Baumgartner, 56, the Austrian extreme athlete renowned for his record-breaking jump from the stratosphere, has died in a paragliding crash in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Marche, Italy, on Thursday, July 17, at around 4:00 PM. Local Italian media reported "Fearless Felix" crashed into the pool of the Le Mimose campsite after reportedly feeling unwell before taking off. Baumgartner had taken off from Fermo, but while flying over the coast, he lost control of his powered hang glider. After the crash, he immediately lost consciousness & went into cardiac arrest. Emergency responders called for an air ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was also injured in the incident after being struck by Baumgartner as he plummeted; her condition is not serious. Shortly before his death, Baumgartner posted a video on social media with the caption "Too much wind," showing him paragliding over a field. The city's mayor, Massimiliano Ciarpella, confirmed his death, calling Baumgartner "a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight." Baumgartner was internationally known for his spectacular jumps, notably his 2012 freefall from the edge of space, reaching 843.6mph & breaking the sound barrier.
