IF it had been "direct theft" then Coinbase could have acted quickly and refunded the BTC sent, but since it was a "scam" there is nothing the exchange could do beyond recommending they, and other victims (of which there are at least 500+ on just that day!) to seek justice via YouTube. It is sadly no surprise that YouTube didn't care beyond "pulling" the video in question and allegedly "banning" the account that posted it. During the process of dealing with YouTube, this family learned that this was not the first time a fraud/scam like this had happened. According to the YouTube rep they spoke with, there were "regular" crypto fraud/scams using "altered" video featuring Elon Musk, SpaceX, and Tesla showing up on the platform with thousands of victims as of December 2024. They next contacted the FBI and were essentially told "too bad you were stupid enough to fall for this scam" and didn't even bother to help or take a report. Then despite working for months to find an attorney that would aid them with recovering their lost BTC, they have learned that no one is willing to take up the case because YouTube is "washing their hands" of any responsiblity. And since the videos used "misappropriated" video of Elon Musk, SpaceX, and Tesla, they are also considered "victims" instead of "aiding and abeting" in the scam/fraud. At one point they considered starting a fundraiser on either GoFundMe or GiveSendGo, but decided against it because of the negative results they had heard other victims had when they attempted it. They have a copy of the transaction that includes the "sent to" and "transaction hash" (5361873c2d4b11bb9b79f80b43a21a13b28d649f32b7f745877de78ea4a4611d) that makes it a simple matter to verify and track the transaction and ALL the BTC that was scammed. Depsite the large number of reports of scam/fraud involving the "sent to" address, there seems to be zero concern to help these people. How sad a situation is it that given that crypto scam/fraud videos CONTINUE to show up on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and others with ZERO repercussions for the scammers or support for the victims?
