Hicks was retired by the Washington State Boxing Commission in 1960, due to a detached retina. He was later re-issued a license in 1968, but retired after fighting to a draw in a comeback bout. An amateur sensation managed and trained by George Chemeris (he handled Pete Rademacher, Eddie Cotton and Greg Haugen among others), and the 1956 Tacoma Golden Gloves Titlist at Featherweight, Hicks entered the 1956 Olympic Trials riding a XX fight win streak and was the consensus favorite for the featherweight slot. He would be upset by Francis "Tabby" Lee, the Navy Featherweight Champion, in the first fight suffering a knockdown in the 2nd round. Hicks would go 18-2-1 (11 Ko's) as a pro.
