The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected the quake at approximately 12:38 PM local time (4:30 PM ET), centered in the Pacific Ocean just south of the Alaska Peninsula near the Shumagin Islands, southeast of Sand Point. Its shallow depth of XXXX km made it potentially more damaging. Sirens wailed & emergency alerts lit up phones across a vast stretch of southwestern Alaska, from Kennedy Entrance near Homer to Unimak Pass near Unalaska, urging residents to evacuate immediately. Officials also warned of potential tsunami impacts on Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, & parts of the eastern Aleutian Islands. David Snider, a tsunami warning coordinator at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, confirmed a tsunami was generated, measuring small waves that rose sea levels about three inches.
