⚠️ WARNING: This post contains graphic descriptions of murder & attempted kidnapping.

Bradley John Murdoch, 67, the notorious killer of British backpacker Peter Falconio, has died of metastasized throat cancer, taking his "evil secret to the grave." Murdoch spent his final hours surrounded by prison guards at Alice Springs Hospital in the Northern Territory. His death means any hope of finding Peter Falconio's body has died with him.

Murdoch was convicted in December 2005 for the murder of Peter Falconio, 28, & the attempted kidnapping of his then-girlfriend, Joanne Lees, on July 14, 2001. He shot Peter in the head on the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek, after tricking the couple into pulling over their VW Kombi campervan. He then threatened Lees, bound her, & bundled her into his ute. Lees managed to escape, running barefoot through the bush & eventually flagging down a truck to raise the alarm.

No trace of Peter Falconio's body has ever been found, with only a small bloodstain on the highway asphalt marking the scene. Murdoch consistently denied killing Peter throughout his trial & two unsuccessful appeals, refusing to disclose the body's location despite facing imminent death. Northern Territory Police stated, "It is deeply regrettable that Murdoch has died without... ever disclosing the location of Peter Falconio’s remains. His silence has denied the Falconio family the closure they have so long deserved." Peter's parents, Joan & Luciano Falconio, who had desperately pleaded for a deathbed confession, expressed their ongoing torment, stating, "Our pain is always with us. We want to bring Peter home where he belongs." A reward of up to $XXXXXXX had been offered for information leading to the body's location.
