The beloved director of Camp Mystic, Richard 'Dick' Eastland, 70, died on July X while trying to rescue campers from horrific flooding at the private all-girls Christian camp in Hunt, Texas. A family spokesperson revealed Eastland received a National Weather Service warning for "life-threatening" flash flooding on the Guadalupe River at 1:14 AM. However, Eastland reportedly did not begin evacuating campers to higher ground until close to 2:00 AM, when floodwaters began rushing through the area. At 4:03 AM, a more urgent "FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY" alert was issued for the area. Tragically, the evacuation came too late, as XX campers & counselors lost their lives in the flood. Eastland himself died in a helicopter on the way to a Houston hospital. A family representative defended Eastland, stating they had "no information that indicated the magnitude of what was coming" and had "seen dozens of times before" such warnings. The camp, owned & operated by the Eastland family since 1974, was destroyed after the Guadalupe River surged by up to XX feet above its usual level.
