Olympic dressage rider Abigail Lyle, 40, has revealed the harrowing details of her abusive relationship with Jonathan Creswell, who would later rape & murder showjumper Katie Simpson, XX. Abigail, 23, dated Creswell for nine months between 2008 & 2009. His story will be told in the upcoming Sky documentary, Death of a Showjumper. Creswell allegedly subjected Abigail to a "barrage of physical & emotional abuse." Among his attacks, Abigail Lyle described being taken to woodland where Creswell kicked, punched, & strangled her, threatening to dump her body. Abigail stated she was "terrified," thinking, "Don't let him kill you because your parents have already lost a child and they can't lose another one." She also noted "red flags," such as Creswell taking calls from other women while lying about being with her, checking her phone, & criticizing her after she socialized. In February 2009, Creswell allegedly assaulted Abigail in his car, grabbing her head, hitting it against the window & dashboard, & beating her body. Abigail stated she learned an "crazy instinct" took over, & she tried to calm him down, as she knew she couldn't win a physical fight. Creswell would then apologize, express love, & bring "unbelievable" relief, until the next attack. Abigail finally found the courage to leave when Creswell threatened to dump her in bleach, which would end her riding career. Creswell was charged with offenses including false imprisonment, kidnapping, & threats to kill. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to common assault & ABH & was jailed for six months. Creswell's version of events was that he was Abigail's "saviour" & that she was "mentally unstable." After his release, Creswell was reportedly greeted as a hero by friends who believed Abigail had fabricated her story. Abigail admitted she was "conflicted," "filled with so much fear. So much self-loathing," & felt "so alone" after leaving him.
