A frustrated millennial recently posted on Reddit asking how anyone is managing to afford a house and a child right now.

“It has to be inheritance money or credit card debt. Right?” she wrote. “I don’t understand how anyone bought a house recently or is raising a child.”

The post quickly struck a nerve. Many commenters said they only managed to buy because they purchased pre-COVID, when prices and interest rates were far lower. “We couldn’t afford our house today,” one user said. Others admitted that childcare costs are what really tip the scales — often thousands per month.

Some credited their ability to manage to inheritance or insurance payouts. Others pointed to high-paying jobs in tech or law. “Our household income is $480K,” one woman said. “But we didn’t come from money — just chose lucrative careers.”

Not everyone had that advantage. One commenter shared, “I’m XX and making $45K. No house, no kids.”

Across the thread, a common theme emerged: those who succeeded either had help, got in early, or made major career moves. For everyone else, it’s a constant struggle. Timing, luck, and location now play a bigger role than ever in achieving what used to be a standard middle-class life.
