A court in Madagascar has sentenced an unnamed man to surgical castration for the 2024 rape of a six-year-old girl, marking the first such measure on the Indian Ocean island. The man was also sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor. The case stemmed from the rape & attempted murder of the six-year-old in Imerintsiatosika, XX km west of the capital Antananarivo. This punishment was introduced as part of a 2024 law in Madagascar specifically targeting rapes of minors aged XX & below, enacted due to a high number of such cases recorded by courts. Didier Razafindralambo, the attorney general at the Court of Appeal, stated the decision is "a strong and significant response from the justice system, intended also to serve as a warning." Surgical castration has been carried out on some sex offenders in the Czech Republic & Germany with the defendant's consent. Last year, Louisiana became the first U.S. state to mandate the procedure for some sex crimes against minors. Chemical castration, a reversible process through drug administration, is also used in countries like Poland & South Korea, & is being considered in Britain.
