I genuinely don’t think it’s had a significant impact on VC in recent years compared to the bid-ask spread. Some were burned on Adobe/Figma but that was textbook antitrust. Code gen is very competitive, lots of active players, so it’s not clear to me that the FTC/DoJ would have taken any interest, but I get that the market is nervous about it. Associating the acqui-hire trend with antitrust may just be a diplomatic way to avoid pointing out that the tools are commodity products.
