Since we're talking about DST (I agree, get rid of it or better yet make it permanent) I have a radical proposal:

We should switch to only having X time zones in the continental US

Merge PT & MT into X time zone (move PT forward X hr)
Merge ET & CT into X time zone (move ET back X hr)

Wouldn't it be so much better? The east and west coasts would only be X hour apart.

We wouldn't have to wake up so early and work so late to be on each other's schedules.

We'd pretty much eliminate jet lag within the US. Think of the efficiency gains of having more time of the day working together in today's world!

The whole purpose of time and time zones is for coordination and commerce.

Back in the day, each city had their own time zone based on solar time (sun over head at noon), which was crazy, but then the railroads made us all closer and we switched to X time zones in the US (in the late 1800s)

But now we're more integrated than ever and many of us on the West coast work at the same time as people on the East coast (not a thing when we decided this scheme!).

Downside: it would cheat some people out of daylight. But actually not much, since we're used to it with daylight savings time anyway... and far bigger places are on one time zone. Alaska was X time zones and moved to 1, all of China is X time zone, etc.
