"The response to Amp Free far exceeded our expectations. We're getting people off the waitlist as fast as we can first in first out. Turns out a lot of people want a free coding agent and devs are OK with ads if they get something good in return and if the ads are tasteful. The early financial metrics are also looking really good and sustainable: A lot of you are great customers for our advertisers ("This feels like a winner" said one advertiser after seeing a "bunch of conversions already"). A lot of you are using smart mode alongside free and paying us. I am now building a new feature that"

"If you saw how people actually use coding agents you would realize Andrej's point is very true. People who keep them on a tight leash using short threads reading and reviewing all the code can get a lot of value out of coding agents. People who go nuts have a quick high but then quickly realize they're getting negative value. For a coding agent getting the basics right (e.g. agents being able to reliably and minimally build/test your code and a great interface for code review and human-agent collab) WhateverBench and "hours of autonomy" for agent harnesses and XX parallel subagents with spec"

"The dilemma we have is that people like you who Get It are able to use these things well but you are rare. :) We are thinking of removing compaction and replacing it with something like /handoff that's basically New Thread with Summary but forces you to say what direction you want to take it in. Still WIP though. Like /handoff derive the types from the database. What would you think about this"

"Yes agreed. This has become a major pain point for me too. @beyang has built a diff UI in Amp that Ive been loving and that we will release soon. Im not sure if you mean that you want the agent to stop and wait for your approval before making edits; if so I think that is bad because it eliminates the point of the agent and its ability to get into feedback loop. (Someone else pointed out that if you do check its work at each step you are forced to understand the code which is a good point. However its not the most efficient way to do so or to get work done.)"

"Amp had purely usage-based pricing from day X which lets us focus XXX% on building the best product not pricing arb and migrations. Cursor/Windsurf/Augment/etc. are all realizing that usage-based is best and are trying to switch but changing pricing is tough and makes devs lose trust. Meanwhile Amp users know they get the best and never waste deep focus time switching or worrying. It's more expensive yes but it's worth it and you can trust it. Tools that undercut Amp on price are too often a Limited Time Offer(tm) to lure you in before jacking up prices. Interestingly often the goal is to"
