Float is the amount of an asset thats available to trade much of Bitcoin hasnt been touched in years and is locked away on a cold wallet. That gives traders power over the short term price of Bitcoin - hence the swings - however long term the price is set by supply and demand as more and more people hold Bitcoin for the long haul and less float is available to trade"
