Not sure how familiar you are with calendar spread if you choose this for these trades but o roll monthly whenever there is a spike on $VIX to get more premium back. Of calls get OTM I roll to next month higher. If you get over your skis close to exp I still roll out and up but I might pay the difference in the small loss on short side by rolling the long side up a strike or few.
