"If you only learn one thing about the OP_RETURN drama make it this. From a network perspective the most important risk to Bitcoins longevity is mining centralization by far. Just when were on the cusp of making transaction selection decentralized with Braidpool P2PoolV2 Sv2 and DATUM along comes a desire for strange policy-violating transactions (mostly 4MB inscriptions). If a miner simply taking a full node off the shelf cannot build a competitive block template with no effort these efforts will simply fail. "Ark + LN's trust model is only "come online every N months to roll over so the LSP doesn't sweep your funds". Its not perfect but during the N months there is no counterparty trust at all. As for your top-level comment hybrid solutions like graduated wallets allow users to not get (materially) rugged when regulators come knocking which I think is an important feature. If regulators don't come knocking (because graduated wallets avoid storing a ton of funds in a custodial system) then great they compete on UX with the custodial platform If they do then it prevents a huge rug. In terms of Ark +"

"I dont think we disagree fundamentally but with meaningful decentralization of the platforms in use requiring that entire exit to L1 is much less a concern and the cost amortization holds. Worth pointing out cause some morons are gonna respond this isnt specific to bitcoin every cryptocurrency with any meaningful use and any meaningful decentralization has the same problem. Its really quite fundamental"

"I don't buy this in the slightest. Yes the UX bar is set by custodial/trusted platforms (I mentioned that in the talk) but suggesting the response to that should be "well every bitcoiner is just gonna use custodial/trusted platforms except for a very select few" is absurd. Yes there's a few bitcoiners who are willing to jump through UX hoops to use something actually self-custodial but its almost none. Increasingly bitcoiners want to actually *use* bitcoin and its starting to be the case that there isn't even an option to pay on chain - its lightning or "sorry you don't have bitcoin or at"

"Sure I agree mining centralization is also a major concern in Bitcoin but not everyone can afford a Lightning channel (as I mention above on-chain isnt even always an option anymore to use Bitcoin these days it has to be Lightning). Shoving our collective heads in the sand isnt a solution"

"I dont agree at all that we have to resort to trust to have a good UX. I get why people think that (self-custodial LN even two years ago was terrible) but its very possible to do. Look at Phoenix the UX is pretty good the biggest issue is just high fees but if more devs were willing to compete (mostly willing to operate an LSP) folks could experiment with different fee models to build a competitive UX (eg sell Bitcoin and use that to subsidize the LSP)"

"IMO there are two big issues in bitcoin to solve: 1) mining decentralization it sounds like we agree on this. Its a big issue but luckily there are some devs working on it and making some progress. 2) wallet decentralization + privacy. You mention privacy explicitly but if all wallets are trustodial/custodial we can't make progress here - the trusted entity is going to eventually break privacy to comply with regulatory demands. Yes maybe we can "win" later but the trend has been in the wrong direction nearly constantly for the last several years and I don't see a lot of devs paying attention"
