"During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries a more systematic method of recruitment in the Ottoman Empire was developed: the devsirme or 'collection'. Every seven years (or more often in periods of frequent war) officials would tour the Christian villages of the Balkans forcibly recruiting teenage boys. According to one sixteenth-century regulation the levy was of one boy from every forty households. These were then taken off to Istanbul and Anatolia converted to Islam taught to speak Turkish and trained to serve either as soldiers or as servants in the imperial household"
