"My current pet theory is that AI is turning tech companies into 1980s oil companies. Exxon and other oil companies used to dominate the top five market caps. They were (and are) massively capital and infrastructure intensive geopolitically exposed and low margin but so entrenched in society that they made sense as the largest companies. Tech became Big Tech - replacing Big Oil - on the back of zero marginal cost. Fixed cost was high but once you made the software you could add exponential users very cheaply. You could run software anywhere often disrupting the local politics of the region. AI"
