Rather the problem with the Galileo affair was an overzealous pedantry - heliocentrism *was* a hypothesis so they legalised it that everyone should make it clear it was a hypothesis. "It was a bit of both. Galileo's academic rivals (the "Pigeon League") took him to the Roman Inquisitorial court. The Roman Inquisition consulted leading astrononers who advised that heliocentrism lacked evidence then consulted Theologians who stated it was a heresy for scripture to be reinterpreted based on an unproved hypothesis. The Roman Inquisition tried to mediate the dispute used the milder language "false and contrary to scripture" instead of "heresy" admonished Galileo's worst detractors but ruled that Heliocentrism had to be held as a hypothesis and could not be used to reinterpret"

Galileo did lie a little and he withheld critical information - such as when he didn't tell the Pope he had an injunction requiring him not to promote Heliocentrism when the Pope sponsored him to write the Dialogue. At the same time he should never have been given the injunction in 1616. "Galileo didn't perform such an experiment at the leaning tower of Pisa that is a myth. There were perhaps others who did but the most accurate experiment of this type was performed by Riccioli and Grimaldi at the Asinelli tower. They were able to measure g but they showed that heavier objects did drop faster. Thebfact is heaviee objects do fall faster unless the experiment is performed in a vacuum"
