"Sure I agree that dogma is problematic for science. But I still wouldn't say the Galileo affair was a good example of dogma in action. Rather the problem with the Galileo affair was an overzealous pedantry - heliocentrism was a hypothesis so they legalised it that everyone should make it clear it was a hypothesis. This was entirely unnecessary. Bruno is a good example of dogma in action but an example of dogma in Theology and philosophy rather than science"

"It was a bit of both. Galileo's academic rivals (the "Pigeon League") took him to the Roman Inquisitorial court. The Roman Inquisition consulted leading astrononers who advised that heliocentrism lacked evidence then consulted Theologians who stated it was a heresy for scripture to be reinterpreted based on an unproved hypothesis. The Roman Inquisition tried to mediate the dispute used the milder language "false and contrary to scripture" instead of "heresy" admonished Galileo's worst detractors but ruled that Heliocentrism had to be held as a hypothesis and could not be used to reinterpret"

"It's nice that you thought you could contribute here with a "simple google search" but no Bellarmine didn't just lecture in Philosophy he also was a professor of Astronomy in Louvain in the 1570s. His lectures were popular and so were compiled into a book. We know from the book that even in the 1570s he was himself challenging the consensus positions on cosmology. But even if he had been solely lecturing on Sacrobosco's Sphaera the fact remains he was considered an expert to be given the position. And typically one wouldn't consider a scientist to be inferior if the scientist just happens to"

The Roman Inquisition saw this as a reinterpretation which was allowed in the light of known science according to Augustine and Aquinas. "Yes very much so. In fact in Galileo's time there was a curious empirical scientific test that suggested to the astronomers that the Earth didn't move - the failure to measure stellar parallax. Stellar parallax remained elusive until the start of the 19th century although it led to Bradley's discovery of stellar aberration published in 1728 the first empirical evidence of the Earth's motion and then the nutation of the Earth surprisingly more prominent than the parallax"
