"I disagree with McClellan on almost everything but he is right here. I make the exact same criticism of Solberg's (the person McClellan is responding to in this video) approach to Matthew 5:1720 in my book "How Jesus Fulfilled the Law." Solberg basically argues that Matthew 5:18 is not allowed to mean what it says because other completely unrelated texts in Paul's epistles and Hebrews seem to say something different. Instead we should interpret Matthew 5:18 on its own terms. That doesn't mean we don't consider the broader biblical context but our priority as exegetes should be the immediate"

"What's absurd is your insistence on telling the text that it is not allowed to say what it says because it contradicts your predetermined conclusion. VanderKam's suggestion takes all the relevant texts for what they plainly say. Your interpretation requires imagining a hypothetical version of the text of X Enoch 71:14 (for which we have zero textual evidence) that says what you want. Again you are imposing onto the text your conclusion that these are prophecies about Jesus instead taking the text for what it says. Btw my invitation to debate still stands. Each time you have responded to me"

"Some of the later ones did consider it heretical. Its also worth noting that what we now call the Book of Enoch may not have been compiled in its complete form until a much later period. The Parables for instance were probably written near the end of the first century AD and may have been added to the earlier sections at a later date. Its possible that the church fathers who spoke favorably about the Enochic writings were not referring to the full version we have today. This is of course conjecture. In any case it doesn't change what the text of 71:14 explicitly says. The Book of Enoch as we"
