"@GregNotSure I built a dual library system where my 10k Altium parts are also available in Kicad simultaneously. All of my symbols & parts are in git. The metadata is in my own company datastore (which is the correct way) KiCad has a new library feature call "http libs". Makes company library/database integration sane. It does the modern thing and allows meta data to come from an HTTP API. One that your company can completely control. I did a talk at KiCon back in May. My company is now funding KiCad for a new feature in V10 related to libraries that will make it even better. My observation"

"in the long time / limit KiCad wins because you can use the raw data. In two hours I made a tool that generates manufacturing docs that Altium still can't do. And if you could get drafts to do it it would be a day of crashes and not useable for any other projects. Liberation from proprietary cad formats means you generate the things you need when you need it"

"@QVHenkel @Raaka_elgupo It is part of my company tooling right now. I was in a pinch yesterday to get some special design docs to to the fabricator. Eventually I think I can do this with Altium it is just harder as parsing .pcbdoc data is a bit more involved"

"some wip from our resident 3d ninj for our new dual altium/kicad workflow. tldr: dynamic fabrication drawings auto-created directly from the pcb/library data and 3d meshes the pad bounding box and component detail projections on the fab layers are calculated from the embedded step file. he has been working on code that extracts the 3d mesh from the footprint's embedded step file to automate rending. the code works directly with s-expr data in the kicad files"

"@CosmicRemnant this not about outjobs etc. There is no way to colorized specific nets / classes / high speed groups. and then auto gen an SVG You can hack it but it is XXX% manual and you will want to blow your brains out if the design ever changes"

"Definitely not doable with an outjob. (I have used altium since 1997 it was protel) Been asking them for years. .Most fabs want good documentation of controlled-z transmission lines on high end boards When you have different types (4050 XX XX XXX and 120) spanning a couple hundred nets (both single ended and differential on 10L board colorizing works very well"
