"The nightmarish beauty of knotweed. I went inside the largest knotweed patch on the River Roding to take a closer look & was struck by how alien this plant is. The patch I went to is so old that the plant has formed clumps like coppiced stools which you can walk between. Above the plant has formed an intricate ceiling which turns the whole inside green but stops light reaching the ground. And thats the nightmare part: within the confines of the patch there was not a single living plant other than knotweed & a literal line where greenery started the patch ended. Because knotweed cant be eaten"

"Wetlands *are* infrastructure & usually much cheaper & more effective than the concrete grey infrastructure that so-called Yimbys are always asking for. LFG have a good double act here: lobby the government to give developers permission to build on wetlands and then lobby the government for that sweet sweet taxpayers cash to build infrastructure to do the work the wetlands used to do (providing clean water stopping flooding sequestering carbon etc) for free"

"I went to the @lfg_uk event at the O2 tonight to see what they advocate for Britain. Some admirable stuff (going out there & getting stuck in to clean up your community) but not a single mention of nature other than a reference to dastardly snails stopping housing developments. Its bizarre to imagine Britains infrastructure wealth & prosperity is completely unrelated to nature & that you can save Britain by destroying the last fragments of nature that remain"

"When the term growth is used in an economic context it means GDP growth Its fascinating that youre so used to your political & economic worldview being the dominant one that you cant conceive that the word growth (in an economic context) could mean anything else than what you believe it to be. I recognise it must seem annoying to you having people question your faith like this but GDP wasnt handed to us on stone tablets from the gods it is a highly artificial concept made up by western societies and accepted as a fact for less than XXX% of the history of our species. "Daniel Finkelstein is such a snowflake that if you even politely question his profound belief that economic growth can *only* mean GDP growth and that any other meaning is absurd hell block you. He is reacting this way because GDP growth is for him (like many right wingers) a totemic belief in which he places his deepest faith. Suggesting that GDP might not be the best way to structure our society when were suffering multiple crises caused by crossing the finite physical boundaries of our planet is like smashing his most sacred idol"
