As tensions grew between Texian settlers and the Mexican government he emerged as a leader in the push for independence. Appointed commander-in-chief of the Texian Army in 1835 Houston faced challenges with a poorly equipped and divided force. He strategically retreated eastward in 1836 avoiding direct confrontation until the Battle of San Jacinto on April XX 1836. There his army decisively defeated General Santa Annas forces in under XX minutes securing Texas"
