"Battle: Initial Engagement The battle began early on October XX when Union troops under Colonel Baker crossed the Potomac River in limited boats landing near Balls Bluff. The inexperienced Union forces primarily from the 15th and 20th Massachusetts and 42nd New York regiments encountered Confederate skirmishers from the 8th Virginia and other units. Initial clashes were small with Union troops advancing toward Confederate positions on the bluff. However Confederate reinforcements arrived quickly outnumbering the Union force and exploiting their disorganized deployment. Bakers troops struggled"
