"Its an attempt to use peoples fear of losing the 'race' with China for a flags and footprints part II for a money grab. Simple as that. Its a 'backup' option because its not even a real serious concern. Flags and footprints part II is a bad sequel. Its unimportant. The important thing is developing a sustainable permanent human presence at the moon. Anything that isn't strategic technology leading to that goal is a waste of money. Especially some cost+ contracts for a dead end one-shot lunar lander backup. Its the very definition of waste perfectly fitting into the way we operated for close"

"They are currently approved for XX from Starbase's X launch pads. They have X EIS nearing final decision for LC-39A and SLC-37 out of Florida. Expected shortly after government shutdown ends up to around end of the year. Draft approvals were shared earlier. These EIS include XX launches per year for LC-39A and XX per year for SLC-37. As well as allowing X Starship Super Heavy launch pads at SLC-37 and X at LC-39A"

"Well they insist on continuing to do tile tests and purposefully dropping them in the ocean. Not to mention boundary pushing re-entry profiles. How reusable it would be doesn't mean anything when it wasnt intended to be reusable. Well have to wait for the first planned Starship catch. Then they'll have likely gave it proper tiles everywhere need and bright it in on an least energetic profile. Well we can hope. Have to listen on whether they still put it through rougher than necessary paces"

"But how far in the future I don't expect that FSD Unsupervised is going to arrive on XX% of the roads in the US that are rural any time soon. That's where XX% of the population lives 60+M people. Tesla currently isn't hitting 25-30% of the car market that is below $35K right now. An affordable car you can choose to drive until we get full driverless would be good"

"Grok was telling me the retail XLT Lightning was $65K start and that you could get a base Pro trim at $57K that mostly targets commercial sales via Ford Pro. But I do wish they were able to keep to their promise of a more affordable version of the Cybertruck. I've spoke with a bunch of people who said price is what keeps them from buying it. That was even when the RWD Cybertruck was available. I certainly hope that steer-by-wire comes to other Tesla's in the future. As for FSD on Cybertruck I think there is something in the approach to training or runtime that isn't quite right. They should"

"I feel for you. You appear to have operated with high anxiety with this launch. I get it. I get anxious as well. I'm very much looking forward to the day when Starship becomes like Falcon X is today. For many many years I used to watch every Falcon X launch. Now I don't even watch them after the fact. I just catch the rollup updates from those reporting on space progress for the week"

"@ShowMeTJ @DimaZeniuk Nope. But that's not the plan for Mars initial landings. They are landing on the engine skirt"

"I think many still aren't seeing the scale that he's planning to manufacture and launch at. He's not hiding it. He's building the machine to build the machines right in front of everyone. Yet people are still concerned about Starship HLS requiring up to a dozen refuelings. That's nothing. All the 'slow' dev and testing is going to transition right into a launch capability at a scale that still seems unreal. Consider that when the two Florida EIS get signed off here in a few months SpaceX will have launch capacity signoff for XXX launches in a year XX at Starbase and XXX in Florida. This is"

"Most rockets have little real idea of their reliability simply because they haven't flown enough to develop good data. They could be one flight away from a total loss each step. You get into the numbers like Falcon X and your reliability stats are meaningful. I'm confident that Starship will get into those kinds of number pretty quickly. Plus every recovery lets you inspect and fine tune. Hard to beat that for improved reliability"

"But that's like ten years away and even then it will be in transition. I have to keep reminding people that XX% of the roads in the US are rural roads and FSD Unsupervised isn't coming to those roads any time soon. XX% of the US population (60+M) lives in rural America. 25-30% of the vehicle market is $35K or less. It would be good to provide an affordable Tesla to them without them waiting XX years"
