"There's very little flint found naturally in Australia but where it was found it was used for tools and spear heads as well as fire by percussion ( similar to "flint and steel" predating European or even Macassan contact which blew me away when I found out). Cherts were sometimes used for tools and such but they are crap due to poor tensile strength. Quartz may have been used (a resource which WASN'T utilised for fire by percussion - even though I use it for firemaking all the time in place of flint) but quartz tends to crumble without leaving sufficiently sharp edges for tool and weapon use."
